A quiet day starting off with a lot of rain (so there's nothing new there then) and a bit of computer work. I have also made someone's day by posting off a piece of Obsidian to their son. Just picking up that piece of Obsidian transported me back eight years to the time when Donna and I had the chance to stay on Ascension Island and one of the things we did there was to hunt down pieces of Obsidian on Wolf's Mountain. The piece I sent to my friend's son Ben, was a chip off a larger chunk that we brought home with us. Later on another little trigger fired up my brain cells and memories. I received a phone call to say that my new spectacles were ready for collection and fitting and I duly popped into Haywards Heath, to the optometrist. My new glasses were fitted and levelled and as I drove away a small voice in the back of my head said "New bins!" which was a catch phrase used by my University BFF, Adrian whenever he had new spectacles. Gosh, did the memories come flooding back. The trials, traumas and the fun of University life. Adrian's smiling and ingenuous face. The day of our wedding when Adrian was our best man. Just one small phrase and I was transported back almost forty years in an instant. I sometimes wonder how these triggers are formed. It doesn't have to be words or images, it can be music too. I only have to hear "Move Closer" by Phyllis Nelson and I can remember my first smoochy dance with a young lady at the sixth form disco (every Friday night, come rain or shine) and I can remember her name as well - Linda. Sometimes smells trigger a wave of memories too. It can be almost any of the senses. Ah well. It's not often that an old fart like me gets to reminisce at the drop of a hat.
